Labor Will Invest in New Facilities for the Western Magpies

12 April 2019

A Shorten Labor Government will invest $60,000 to upgrade boxes for coaches and first aid, and provide a new electronic scoreboard at the home ground of the mighty Western Magpies Australian Football Club in Chelmer.

Member for Moreton Graham Perrett said the current boxes for coaches and first aid were old and needed replacement.

“Australian rules football is a growing code in Queensland, with women and girls taking up the game driving increased participation that is expected to boost the Magpies’ playing membership to well over 500.

“The existing boxes are old and not fit for purpose, and the scoreboard was flood damaged in 2011,” Mr Perrett said.

“If elected, Labor’s investment will ensure the Magpies’ facilities meet the standards required for a club competing in the QAFL, as well as fielding women’s, reserve, and Under 18 teams, and the Sherwood Junior Australian Football Club,” Mr Perrett added.

Shadow Minister for Sport, Senator Don Farrell, said Labor is committed to supporting clubs and communities to improve local sporting facilities to give all Australians a fair go at sport.

“Whether they dream of starring for the Magpies, being the next Tayla Harris or just want to enjoy the benefits of being physically active, we want to give all Australians the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of sport.

“Our investments in local community sporting clubs and facilities like these help them build capacity to meet the welcome growth in female participation in club sport and support more Australians to live active, healthy lifestyles,” Senator Farrell said.
