A Shorten Labor Government will provide $40 million over four years to emergency relief organisations across the country, including $155,000 to Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre.
The Morrison Government is cutting the funding for many emergency relief services at the end of the year. This will see community organisations forced to close their doors on people seeking assistance or having to cut the services they offer.
The Labor funding will reverse the Liberals’ cuts to emergency relief organisations and provide a much needed funding boost to the sector.
Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre will receive an additional $155,000 over four years to deliver services to the community in Sherwood.
The Liberals’ cruel cuts will make it harder for people facing extreme financial hardship to have basic quality of life and get by.
Unlike the Liberals who only stand up for the top end of town, Labor will always stand up for Australians doing it tough.
These services provide support to vulnerable people who have nowhere else to turn by providing food hampers, funding for fuel to attend specialist medical appointments and other financial assistance.
A Shorten Labor Government will also support Australians in financial hardship by:
- Doubling the number of financial counsellors across the country.
- Expanding low-cost alternatives to pay day loans for low-income Australians, providing safe and fair credit options when things get tough.
- Reversing the Morrison Government’s $5.5 million cut to emergency relief organisations across the country and providing a much needed top up to the emergency relief sector.
Many vulnerable Australians are falling through the cracks. Labor will make sure our charities and not-for-profits have the resources they need to support our fellow Australians.
LABOR MEMBER FOR MORETON GRAHAM PERRETT SAID:
“Many local families are finding it tough to make ends meet; for some, putting food on the table each night for their children is impossible.”
“The Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre is often the first port of call for families in need. This funding boost will make sure that the Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre has the resources it needs to keep helping local families in distress.”
